▶︎ The BDS Movement

The Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is a global, nonviolent campaign to pressure Israel to follow international human rights laws in their treatment of the Palestinian people.

It was inspired by the call for BDS by Black South Africans. and those around the world who stood in solidarity with them, to successfully pressure the South African government to abandon its policy of apartheid.

Boycotts (B) at the individual and group levels, Divestment (D) by financial institutions, companies, universities, and government-run ministries, e.g. research collaboration with defense ministries, etc, and Sanctions (S) by states or governments are a systematic program that realistically puts pressure on Israel.

▶︎ The three demands of BDS
  1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantle the Wall
  2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality
  3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN Resolution 194

Handala is a character created by Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali, depicting him as a 10-year-old boy, the same age Naji was when he was exiled from his homeland of Palestine. To reject the injustice imposed on Palestinians by the international community, he stands with his hands clasped, facing away from the camera, and expresses his protest with a pinhead resembling a cactus (a symbol of Palestinian resistance). His name comes from the Handala plant, which grows in Palestine, regrows when cut, and develops deep roots. Handala will remain 10 years old and will not grow up until he can return to Palestine.
